Target/Biomarker Information
Pregnancy-Specific Protein B (PSPB) is primarily identified and utilized within the context of bovine pregnancy diagnostics as a reliable marker for early detection of pregnancy. In equines (horses), PSPB is not a standard marker for pregnancy diagnosis. Instead, horse pregnancy detection and monitoring employ different methods and markers:
eCG (Equine Chorionic Gonadotropin): Previously known as PMSG (Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin), eCG is a hormone produced by the endometrial cups of pregnant mares from about day 40 to day 120 of gestation. It's used to indicate pregnancy and can also stimulate the development of accessory corpora lutea in the ovaries.
Ultrasound: Ultrasound scanning is the most common and reliable method for early pregnancy diagnosis in horses, typically starting as early as 14 days post-ovulation. It allows for the visualization of the gestational sac, embryo, and later, fetal development and heartbeat.
Progesterone Levels: While not a direct marker of pregnancy, maintaining high levels of progesterone is essential for the maintenance of early pregnancy. Veterinarians may monitor progesterone levels to assess the health of the pregnancy, although this is not a method for pregnancy diagnosis.
Palpation per Rectum: This traditional method can be used from about day 30 post-ovulation to detect pregnancy by feeling the uterus, embryonic vesicle, or fetus through the rectal wall. However, it requires significant skill and has been largely supplanted by ultrasound for early pregnancy detection.
Relaxin: In some species, relaxin hormone measurements can be used as an indicator of pregnancy. While relaxin assays have been developed for use in dogs and cats, their application in equine pregnancy diagnosis is not as common or established.
For horses, the use of ultrasound remains the gold standard for early and accurate pregnancy diagnosis, allowing for the detection of twins, monitoring fetal development, and identifying any problems early in gestation. Hormonal assays like eCG provide additional tools for confirming and managing pregnancy, especially in breeding programs and for mares with a history of reproductive issues.
