    Target/Biomarker Information

Bovine Amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) is a remarkable molecule in bovine neuropathology, occupying a central role in our understanding of neurodegenerative conditions afflicting cattle. Comprising 42 amino acids, Aβ42 is a fragment of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and serves as a critical component in the formation of amyloid plaques within the bovine brain. These plaques, primarily composed of Aβ42, are emblematic pathological features associated with cognitive dysfunction in cattle, most notably in cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), colloquially referred to as "mad cow disease."

The generation of Aβ42 occurs through the proteolytic cleavage of APP, a process mediated by β-secretase and γ-secretase enzymes. In cattle afflicted by BSE, an aberration in Aβ42 metabolism and clearance results in its aggregation, leading to the accumulation of amyloid plaques. These plaques disrupt normal neural function, contributing significantly to cognitive deficits, neural degeneration, and the clinical manifestations observed in affected cattle.

The implications of Aβ42 aggregation extend further, encompassing a cascade of pathological events. These include neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and synaptic dysfunction, all of which collectively exacerbate the neurodegenerative processes occurring in cattle suffering from BSE.
