Target/Biomarker information
Bovine C-reactive Protein (bCRP) stands as a cornerstone biomarker in the realm of bovine health, intricately woven into the fabric of a cow's immune response to inflammatory challenges. Structurally, it is a pentameric protein, composed of five identical subunits, each boasting a molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. Its hepatic synthesis is instigated by pro-inflammatory cytokines, most notably interleukin-6 (IL-6). The hallmark of bCRP lies in its rapid response to inflammation. When a cow confronts infectious agents, injuries, or other inflammatory triggers, the liver promptly initiates the production of bCRP. This leads to a noticeable increase in its concentration within the bloodstream, making bCRP an invaluable sentinel biomarker, capable of detecting even subtle deviations from normal health in a bovine. Functionally, bCRP serves as an acute-phase reactant, playing a pivotal role in the bovine innate immune system. It enhances opsonization and phagocytosis, bolstering the body's defenses against invading pathogens and damaged tissues. bCRP's contribution extends to the initiation of the complement cascade, further aiding in the removal of threats.
