Target/Biomarker information
Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein (MOG) in cattle represents a pivotal component of the central nervous system (CNS), where its role in maintaining the integrity of the myelin sheath and its potential involvement in immune regulation within the CNS have garnered significant scientific interest. MOG is a glycoprotein primarily localized on the surface of oligodendrocytes, specialized glial cells tasked with the production of the myelin sheath. This sheath serves as an insulating layer around nerve fibers, enabling efficient conduction of electrical signals along neurons. MOG's presence on oligodendrocytes is essential for the adhesion between the myelin sheath and the underlying axons, ensuring structural stability and the preservation of nerve function. Within the context of the immune system, MOG's role is multifaceted and not fully elucidated. It is believed to participate in immune regulation within the CNS, contributing to the maintenance of immune tolerance. However, under certain conditions, such as autoimmune responses, MOG can become a target of the immune system, leading to the production of autoantibodies against MOG.
