Target/Biomarker Information
Canine Proinsulin, an 81-amino acid peptide, serves as a critical intermediate in the intricate cascade of events that culminate in the production of insulin, the hormone responsible for glucose regulation in dogs. It is synthesized and secreted by the beta cells nestled within the pancreatic islets of Langerhans, marking the initial steps in insulin biosynthesis.
The journey of Canine Proinsulin begins with the synthesis of preproinsulin, a longer precursor molecule. Preproinsulin subsequently undergoes a remarkable transformation, folding into proinsulin, a molecule that consists of three distinct regions: the A chain, B chain, and a connecting peptide known as the C-peptide. Notably, it is this C-peptide that distinguishes proinsulin from mature insulin.
During proinsulin processing, a series of specific enzymes operate with precision to cleave the C-peptide from proinsulin. This cleavage event marks a critical transition, as it transforms proinsulin into the active insulin molecule. The newly formed insulin is then released into circulation, where it acts as a potent regulator of glucose metabolism.
The presence of the C-peptide within proinsulin is more than a mere structural element; it serves a physiological purpose. The C-peptide exerts beneficial effects on blood vessel health and may possess independent actions on glucose regulation. While it does not have the same glucose-lowering properties as insulin, its measurement has garnered interest in both clinical and research settings.
