Target/Biomarker information
Canine YKL-40, a glycoprotein of approximately 40 kDa, emerges as a fascinating molecular actor in the intricate theater of the canine immune system and tissue physiology. While it shares structural features with chitinases, it notably lacks chitinase activity, setting it apart from its enzymatic counterparts. Its presence is pervasive in various canine tissues, with prominent expression in the liver, kidneys, lungs, and immune cells. Structurally, Canine YKL-40 is characterized by its unique chitin-binding domain, which can interact with extracellular matrix components, suggesting a role in tissue remodeling and repair. This glycoprotein's glycosylation also contributes to its stability and modulates its functions, particularly in the context of inflammation. The expression of Canine YKL-40 is tightly regulated and can be induced by various pro-inflammatory stimuli. Immune cells, such as macrophages and neutrophils, are prominent sources of YKL-40 production in response to infections and inflammatory signals. This induction reflects its role as a pro-inflammatory mediator and a marker of immune system activation. Beyond its involvement in immune responses, Canine YKL-40 has been associated with tissue remodeling processes. In conditions characterized by tissue injury and repair, such as wound healing and fibrosis, YKL-40's interactions with fibroblasts and epithelial cells become particularly relevant. It appears to modulate cellular activities related to extracellular matrix turnover and tissue restructuring.
