Soluble ST2 (sST2) in dogs is a soluble receptor that plays a pivotal role in the intricate web of immune responses, inflammation regulation, and cardiac health. It represents a key component in the cascade of events that unfold during cardiac stress, injury, or inflammation.
In greater detail, sST2 is a product of the ST2 gene and exists in two primary forms: the membrane-bound ST2L and the soluble sST2. ST2L serves as a receptor for interleukin-33 (IL-33), an interleukin associated with anti-inflammatory and protective effects in the cardiovascular system. When IL-33 binds to membrane-bound ST2L, it contributes to cardiac protection and immune regulation.
However, sST2, the soluble form of the ST2 receptor, acts as a decoy receptor, neutralizing the beneficial effects of IL-33. In dogs, sST2 is primarily secreted by cardiac cells, particularly cardiomyocytes, in response to cardiac stressors, inflammation, or injury. Its presence in the bloodstream indicates an activated immune response and an underlying cardiac issue.
