    Target/Biomarker information

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) takes center stage in the intricate web of equine endocrinology, serving as the linchpin that orchestrates the horse's response to stressors and maintains hormonal balance. Structurally, ACTH is a 39-amino acid peptide hormone synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It belongs to the melanocortin family, a group of hormones with multifaceted physiological roles. ACTH's primary mission lies in its regulation of the adrenal glands, specifically the adrenal cortex. When a horse encounters stressors or experiences shifts in its internal environment, the hypothalamus promptly releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH, in turn, stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to release ACTH into the bloodstream. In its journey through circulation, ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex, where it binds to specific receptors on the surface of adrenal cells. This binding event triggers intracellular processes that culminate in the synthesis and release of cortisol, a corticosteroid hormone. Often referred to as the "stress hormone," cortisol exerts a wide array of effects on equine physiology. Cortisol holds the reins in regulating metabolism, influencing immune function, and steering the horse's response to stressors. It elevates blood glucose levels, modulates immune responses, and orchestrates anti-inflammatory actions. Furthermore, cortisol influences protein and fat metabolism, maintains electrolyte balance, and exerts its influence on cardiovascular function.
