    Target/Biomarker Information

Equine Apolipoprotein E, often referred to as Equine ApoE, is a multifaceted protein that occupies a central role in the intricate domain of equine physiology. Predominantly synthesized in the liver of domestic horses (Equus ferus caballus), this glycoprotein exhibits a unique structural feature marked by carbohydrates attached to its polypeptide chain. As a distinguished member of the apolipoprotein family, Equine ApoE orchestrates a complex symphony of lipid metabolism, with a particular emphasis on cholesterol management within the equine body.

The prominence of Equine ApoE comes to the forefront in its association with high-density lipoproteins (HDL), commonly hailed as "good cholesterol." HDL particles, acting as custodians of cholesterol and lipids in the equine bloodstream, rely significantly on Equine ApoE for their structural integrity and functional prowess. This biomarker serves as an integral component of HDLs, contributing not only to their structural integrity but also to their dynamic role in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway.

The choreography of cholesterol transport begins with Equine ApoE. It binds to lipids, effectively transforming nascent HDL particles into active carriers of excess cholesterol. These HDLs embark on a journey to peripheral tissues, where they retrieve surplus cholesterol and lipids, subsequently venturing back to the liver. In the liver, cholesterol undergoes metabolism and eventual excretion, ensuring the maintenance of optimal cholesterol levels within the equine body.
