This biomarker originates from cytokeratin 19, a structural protein that plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of the cytoskeleton of epithelial cells. Epithelial cells are a fundamental component of various equine tissues, including the respiratory system. When these cells undergo pathological changes, such as injury or malignant transformation, CYFRA21-1 fragments can be released into the bloodstream, making it a valuable indicator of the health of the respiratory and epithelial systems in equines.

    At the molecular level, CYFRA21-1 consists of specific fragments of cytokeratin 19, with the 21-1 fragment being a notable component. These soluble protein fragments can be detected through blood tests. In healthy horses, CYFRA21-1 levels are typically low. However, when there is damage or malignancy in epithelial tissues, particularly in the lungs, the levels of CYFRA21-1 can significantly increase.
