    Target/Biomarker Information

HER2, also known as Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2, is a biomarker of significant importance within the realm of horses (equines). This transmembrane protein receptor belongs to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family and is primarily found on the surface of certain equine cells. Its primary role is to regulate cell growth and proliferation by participating in intracellular signaling pathways that promote cell division.

In normal equine cells, HER2 plays a crucial role in maintaining a balanced and controlled rate of cell growth. It does so by facilitating the transmission of growth-promoting signals. However, when genetic mutations or alterations in HER2 expression occur, this finely tuned system can go awry, leading to uncontrolled cell growth—a hallmark feature of cancer. The significance of HER2 abnormalities becomes particularly pronounced in the context of equine mammary gland tumors, where HER2 overexpression is associated with aggressive tumor behavior.
