    Target/Biomarker information

Feline Amyloid-beta 40 (Aβ40) stands as a pivotal molecule in feline neuroscience, assuming a central role in our understanding of neurodegenerative conditions affecting our cherished feline companions. Comprising 40 amino acids, Aβ40 is a fragment of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and represents a critical component in the formation of amyloid plaques within the feline brain. These plaques, predominantly composed of Aβ40, symbolize cognitive decline in cats, most notably in cases of feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome (FCDS), which shares similarities with Alzheimer's disease in humans. The genesis of Aβ40 involves proteolytic cleavage of APP, a process mediated by β-secretase and γ-secretase enzymes. In cats afflicted by FCDS, an imbalance in Aβ40 metabolism and clearance leads to its aggregation, culminating in the accumulation of amyloid plaques. These plaques disrupt normal neural function, contributing substantially to the cognitive deficits and memory impairments observed in affected cats. The implications of Aβ40 aggregation extend beyond cognitive deficits. Aβ40 aggregates can trigger neuroinflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and synaptic dysfunction, collectively exacerbating the neurodegenerative processes occurring in cats suffering from FCDS.
