Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) in cats, often referred to as stromelysin-1, stands as a multifaceted enzymatic entity within the feline biological landscape. It is part of the matrix metalloproteinase family, a group of enzymes renowned for their profound impact on tissue remodeling, repair, and maintenance in cats.
Structurally, MMP-3 is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase, featuring a catalytic domain that enables it to cleave specific components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Its substrate range encompasses key ECM constituents, including collagen, proteoglycans, and fibronectin. This proteolytic capability allows MMP-3 to play a central role in orchestrating tissue remodeling processes in cats.
MMP-3's enzymatic activity is tightly regulated under normal physiological conditions. However, it can become dysregulated in various pathological states, leading to excessive ECM degradation and tissue damage. This dysregulation can manifest in several feline health conditions.
