Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) in cats (felines) is a protein with pivotal roles in reproductive physiology, specifically associated with the prostate gland. PSA, also known as kallikrein-3, belongs to the kallikrein-related peptidase family and is recognized for its specific expression in the prostate tissue of male cats.
Structurally, PSA is classified as a serine protease, a type of enzyme involved in catalyzing biochemical reactions. Its expression is tightly regulated by androgens, which are the male sex hormones responsible for the development and maintenance of male reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics.
PSA is predominantly localized within the prostate tissue of male cats, where it plays a significant role in the reproductive process. It functions by breaking down proteins in seminal fluid, facilitating the liquefaction of semen after ejaculation. This process enhances sperm motility and mobility, promoting fertilization during mating.
