    Target/Biomarker information

Feline Parathyroid Hormone (fPTH) stands as a linchpin in the intricate web of endocrine regulation within the feline body. Structurally, it is a single-chain polypeptide hormone comprising 84 amino acids. Its primary site of synthesis and secretion resides in the parathyroid glands, four small, pea-sized structures discreetly positioned near the thyroid gland. The pivotal role of fPTH revolves around preserving the meticulous balance of calcium and phosphate in the feline bloodstream. The orchestration of this balance is essential for a myriad of physiological processes, including neuromuscular function, blood clotting, and cellular signaling. The very essence of fPTH's function lies in its responsiveness to alterations in ionized calcium levels. When blood calcium levels drop below the optimal range, specialized calcium-sensing receptors within the parathyroid glands spring into action. They trigger the secretion of fPTH, which sets off a cascade of events aimed at restoring calcium equilibrium. The primary target of fPTH's actions is the feline skeleton. Here, it exerts its influence by activating osteoclasts, specialized cells tasked with bone resorption. This process entails the breakdown of bone tissue, releasing stored calcium into the bloodstream. Simultaneously, fPTH tackles the issue of calcium excretion through the kidneys, where it fosters the reabsorption of calcium from urine, further conserving this vital mineral. Yet, fPTH's influence extends beyond these roles. It also collaborates with the gastrointestinal system by promoting the synthesis of calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D. Calcitriol, in turn, enhances the absorption of dietary calcium in the intestines, finalizing the loop of calcium regulation.
