    Target/Biomarker information

Feline Proinsulin, an intricate 86-amino acid peptide hormone, occupies a pivotal position in the multifaceted dance of insulin biosynthesis within cats. It is synthesized and secreted by the beta cells nestled within the pancreatic islets of Langerhans, marking the beginning of the remarkable journey toward the production of insulin, the master regulator of glucose metabolism in cats. The voyage of Cat Proinsulin commences with the synthesis of preproinsulin, a larger precursor molecule. This preproinsulin undergoes a profound metamorphosis, folding into proinsulin, a molecule comprising three distinct regions: the A chain, B chain, and a connecting peptide known as the C-peptide. Significantly, it is the presence of this C-peptide that sets proinsulin apart from mature insulin. During proinsulin processing, a meticulously choreographed sequence of enzymatic cleavage events takes place. Specific enzymes cleave the C-peptide from proinsulin, marking a critical transition in the process. This cleavage event transforms proinsulin into the active insulin molecule, which is then released into circulation, where it exerts its profound influence on glucose metabolism. The C-peptide, while often considered a byproduct of insulin processing, holds intrinsic value. It is not merely a structural element; it possesses physiological significance. Research suggests that the C-peptide may have independent actions on blood vessel health and other metabolic processes, making it a subject of scientific interest.
