Soluble Fms-Like Tyrosine Kinase-1 (sFlt-1) in cats (felines) is a pivotal biomarker with multifaceted roles in vascular health and angiogenesis regulation. It is a soluble receptor that plays a critical role in regulating the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) and maintaining vascular homeostasis. Structurally, sFlt-1 is a truncated form of the transmembrane receptor, Fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (Flt-1), which is involved in binding vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PlGF).
In healthy adult cats, sFlt-1 levels are typically regulated to contribute to the maintenance of normal vascular function. It serves as a decoy receptor, sequestering VEGF and PlGF and preventing them from binding to their cellular receptors. This regulation is crucial for preventing excessive angiogenesis and ensuring proper vascular function.
