    Pathogen Information

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a pathogenic nematode that is primarily transmitted through ingestion of infected gastropods, such as slugs and snails, or ingestion of prey animals who have backtracked the larvae. The infection of canids occurs when these animals, often domesticated dogs, accidentally consume infected intermediate hosts or contact them with their mouths. After ingestion, the larvae penetrate the intestinal wall and travel via the bloodstream to the lungs, where they reside in the small pulmonary vessels. Over time, the adult worms then migrate to the right side of the heart and pulmonary arteries, where they lay their eggs. This process results in chronic inflammation of the lungs, and eventually, it can lead to severe respiratory distress and cardiovascular disease.

Angiostrongylus vasorum has been found to infect canids in many parts of the world, including Europe, North America, South America, and Africa. In some regions, the prevalence of the parasite is increasing, possibly because of climate change. For example, higher temperatures and increased rainfalls could enable the expansion of the gastropod populations, which are primary intermediate hosts, and thus the transmission of the larvae-infected infective stage.

Studies have shown that Angiostrongylus vasorum exhibits some distinct characteristics compared with other lungworms. Specifically, its life cycle is more complex, as it requires two intermediate hosts: gastropod mollusks and vertebrates, usually rodents. Additionally, compared to other species in the Metastrongyloidea family, Angiostrongylus vasorum is unique regarding its pathogenesis and host immune system stimulation.

The genome of Angiostrongylus vasorum has not been fully sequenced yet, but research has identified several key proteins involved in the pathogen's invasion of host tissues. These include ASP-1 and ASP-2, which play roles in the migration of Angiostrongylus vasorum larvae through host blood vessels. These proteins are potential targets for intervention against this pathogen.

In terms of its clinical presentation, Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in dogs can have a varied manifestation, ranging from mild coughing and lethargy to severe respiratory distress and even death. Furthermore, the effects of the pathogen on different animals, including wild canids, such as foxes and wolves, and other non-canid mammals, such as raccoons, hedgehogs, and marsupials, have not been well studied yet.

Diagnostic methods for detecting Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in canids include fecal examination, serology testing, and PCR-based assays. Fecal examination is a classic method that involves the detection of the pathogen's eggs in stool samples. However, the sensitivity of fecal examination varies and could be influenced by factors such as the timing of sample collection and the number of parasites shed by infected hosts. Serology tests aim to detect specific antibodies against Angiostrongylus vasorum proteins, such as Ag5 and Ag15, which are indicative of ongoing infection. PCR-based assays are also available, which utilize primers designed to target specific genes, such as the 5S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, enabling sensitive and specific detection of the pathogen.

In conclusion, Angiostrongylus vasorum is a complex and unique lungworm species with a multi-faceted life cycle and pathogenicity. The parasite causes a range of clinical symptoms in canids, which can be severe and even fatal. Due to the potential impact of climate change and the lack of an effective vaccine or treatment, understanding the molecular mechanisms of Angiostrongylus vasorum infection is becoming more critical. Hence, more scientific studies are needed to elucidate the pathogenesis, immunity, and molecular mechanisms of this organism, which would lead to better diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic options.
