    Pathogen Information

Chlamydophila abortus, a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium, is a member of the family Chlamydiaceae. It is classified as a prokaryotic bacterium due to its lack of a true nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Chlamydophila abortus exhibits a unique biphasic developmental cycle consisting of two distinct forms, the elementary body (EB) and the reticulate body (RB).

The EB is the infectious but metabolically inactive form of the pathogen, and it plays a critical role in the transmission of the bacterium between hosts. The RB, on the other hand, is the non-infectious but metabolically active form, responsible for the replication of the pathogen within the host cell cytoplasm. The transformation from the EB to the RB form is triggered once the EB enters the host cell.

The major outer membrane protein (MOMP) is a prominent gene and protein found in Chlamydophila abortus, playing a crucial role in the initial attachment of the pathogen to the host cell. MOMP is known to contain both conserved and variable regions, which can be utilized for diagnostic purposes.

Enzootic abortion, also known as ovine enzootic abortion (OEA), is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydophila abortus, affecting primarily domestic ruminant species like sheep and goats. Infected animals experience reproductive complications, including abortion, stillbirth, and the production of weak offspring. Enzootic abortion is a significant threat to the livestock industry, leading to economic losses in many countries worldwide.

In humans, exposure to Chlamydophila abortus through contact with infected animals or their by-products may result in flu-like symptoms or severe respiratory illness. The disease may manifest as an atypical pneumonia that can progress rapidly and is often associated with occupational exposure, such as veterinary work.

Diagnostic methods for Chlamydophila abortus are mainly molecular tests like PCR and nucleic acid hybridization assays that detect the presence of bacterial DNA in clinical samples. These tests often target genes associated with MOMP or other specific bacterial genes. Serological tests such as ELISA can detect Chlamydophila abortus-specific antibodies in infected animals' serum samples.

In summary, Chlamydophila abortus is an obligate intracellular bacterium that infects various animal species, including domestic ruminants, leading to reproductive complications such as enzootic abortion. In humans, exposure to Chlamydophila abortus may result in flu-like symptoms or severe respiratory illness. Diagnostic methods for this pathogen include both molecular and serological techniques that enable the identification of infected animals and potential carriers.
