    Pathogen Information

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the digestive system of pigs. The disease was first discovered in the United Kingdom in 1971, and since then, it has spread globally, causing significant economic losses to the pig industry.

PEDV is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus classified under the Coronaviridae family. It is a positive-sense RNA virus with a genome size of approximately 28 kilobases. The genome encodes several structural and non-structural proteins necessary for the replication, assembly, and release of the virus.

The PEDV genome is organized into multiple open reading frames (ORFs), including ORF1a/1b, spike (S), membrane (M), envelope (E), and nucleocapsid (N). The ORF1a/1b region encodes two large polyproteins that are cleaved into non-structural proteins, including RNA replicase and helicase. The S protein mediates virus attachment and entry into the host cells, while the M protein is involved in virion assembly and release. The E protein plays a crucial role in virus assembly and pathogenesis, while the N protein is critical for virus replication and packaging.

PEDV primarily infects pigs of all ages, but the most severe cases occur in suckling piglets. The virus causes acute enteritis, leading to severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and high mortality rates. In neonatal piglets, PEDV infection can cause up to 100% mortality within the first week of life, leading to significant economic losses to the pig industry.

The transmission of PEDV occurs mainly through the fecal-oral route, either through direct or indirect contact with infected pigs, contaminated feed, equipment, or other fomites. The virus can survive in the environment for an extended period, making it challenging to control its spread.

PEDV diagnosis relies on various methods, including virus isolation, antigen and antibody detection, histopathology, and nucleic acid amplification. Virus isolation involves culturing the virus in vitro and identifying the virus using immunofluorescence or electron microscopy. Antigen and antibody detection are based on the detection of viral proteins or virus-specific antibodies in serum or fecal samples. Histopathology involves examining tissue sections for specific pathological changes characteristic of PEDV infection. Nucleic acid amplification techniques, such as RT-PCR, qPCR, and LAMP, are highly sensitive and specific methods for detecting PEDV RNA.

Prevention and control of PEDV involve a combination of measures, including biosecurity, vaccination, and treatment. Biosecurity measures aim to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus by minimizing direct and indirect contact between infected and non-infected animals. Vaccination can reduce the severity and incidence of the disease in infected herds, and treatment involves supportive therapy, including rehydration and electrolyte replacement.

In conclusion, PEDV is a significant threat to the global swine industry due to its high mortality rates and economic impact. The virus is highly contagious and challenging to control, making it essential to take preventive measures through biosecurity and vaccination. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective control and prevention of PEDV outbreaks.
