    Equine p-tau202 and p-tau205, the phosphorylated Tau Proteins unique to horses, occupy a distinctive position within the intricate mosaic of equine neurobiology. At their core, they are Tau proteins that have undergone specific biochemical modifications – phosphorylation – at residues 202 and 205. Under normal circumstances, Tau proteins in horses play a pivotal role in stabilizing microtubules, crucial for axonal stability and intracellular transport within neuronal cells.

    However, the narrative transforms in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. Phosphorylation events trigger the misfolding and aggregation of Tau proteins, and in the equine species, p-tau202 and p-tau205 tend to aggregate and form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) within neural tissues.

    These NFTs, analogous to those observed in human neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, represent a pathological signature of several equine neurodegenerative conditions. The accumulation of p-tau202 and p-tau205 in NFTs contributes to progressive neuronal dysfunction, altered behavior, and motor disturbances characteristic of conditions like equine neuroaxonal dystrophy (eNAD) and specific encephalopathies.
