    Equine p-tau217, the phosphorylated Tau Protein 217 variant specific to horses, stands as a sentinel within the intricate landscape of equine neurobiology. At its core, it is a Tau protein that has undergone precise phosphorylation at residue 217. Under normal circumstances, Tau proteins serve as the guardians of microtubule stability within neuronal cells, ensuring proper intracellular transport and the structural integrity of axons.

    However, when the stage is set for neurodegenerative processes, the narrative takes a different turn. Phosphorylation events can lead to the misfolding and aggregation of Tau proteins, and equine p-tau217 is no exception. It tends to aggregate and form neurofibrillary tangles within the neural tissues of afflicted horses.

    These neurofibrillary tangles, reminiscent of those observed in human neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, serve as a pathological signature of various equine neurodegenerative conditions. The accumulation of p-tau217 in neurofibrillary tangles contributes to progressive neuronal dysfunction, ultimately manifesting as clinical signs in conditions like equine neuroaxonal dystrophy (eNAD) and specific encephalopathies.
