    Feline p-tau202 and p-tau205, the phosphorylated Tau Protein 202 and 205 variants specific to cats, stand as key entities in the intricate tapestry of feline neurobiology. At their core, they are Tau proteins that have undergone precise biochemical modifications – phosphorylation – at residues 202 and 205, respectively. Tau proteins, in their unmodified form, are essential for maintaining microtubule stability within neuronal cells, ensuring proper axonal structure and intracellular transport.

    However, the story takes a dramatic turn in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. Phosphorylation events can trigger the misfolding and aggregation of Tau proteins, and feline p-tau202 and p-tau205 are particularly susceptible to this transformation. They tend to aggregate and form neurofibrillary tangles within the neural tissues of afflicted cats.

    These neurofibrillary tangles, similar to those observed in human neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, serve as a pathological hallmark of various feline neurodegenerative conditions. The accumulation of p-tau202 and p-tau205 in these tangles contributes to progressive neuronal dysfunction, synaptic disruption, and cognitive impairment, which are observed in conditions such as feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome (FCDS).
