Target/Biomarker information
Canine β-CTx (Beta-CrossLaps) is a pivotal biomarker, deeply interwoven with the intricacies of canine bone health. It takes its place within the canine species, Canis lupus familiaris, as an essential fragment of type I collagen, a major component of bone tissue. Its significance is underscored by its role as a marker of bone resorption, offering insights into the dynamic process of bone turnover in dogs. In the realm of bone metabolism, β-CTx stands as a sentinel of bone resorption, the process through which old or damaged bone tissue is broken down. This phenomenon is orchestrated by specialized cells called osteoclasts, responsible for initiating the release of fragments of type I collagen, including β-CTx, into the bloodstream. The measurement of Canine β-CTx provides a quantitative assessment of the rate of bone resorption in dogs. Elevated levels of β-CTx indicate heightened bone turnover, suggesting an imbalance in bone metabolism. This imbalance can be a harbinger of bone disorders or diseases, including osteoporosis, where bone resorption outpaces bone formation. It is also relevant in conditions like bone fractures or periodontal disease, where bone tissue is being actively remodeled.
