    Target/Biomarker Information

Equine Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the primary class of antibodies found in horses and is essential for their immune defense. IgG antibodies are produced by plasma cells, which are derived from B cells of the immune system, in response to exposure to antigens such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. In horses, IgG plays a crucial role in both passive and active immunity.

Roles and Importance of Equine IgG:

Pathogen Neutralization: Equine IgG neutralizes pathogens by binding to them directly, which prevents them from infecting cells and helps to clear them from the body.

Opsonization: IgG facilitates the opsonization of pathogens, marking them for destruction and engulfment by phagocytic cells like macrophages and neutrophils.

Immune System Activation: IgG can activate various components of the immune system, including the complement system, which leads to the lysis of pathogens or infected cells.

Antibody-Dependent Cellular Cytotoxicity (ADCC): IgG can bind to target cells (such as virus-infected or altered-self cells) and recruit natural killer (NK) cells that will destroy these target cells.

Passive Immunity Transfer: Foals are born with an immature immune system and receive their initial dose of IgG through colostrum—the first milk produced by the mare following birth. This transfer of maternal antibodies is critical for the foal's early life protection.

Immune Memory: After an initial exposure to a specific antigen, IgG provides long-lasting immunity by "remembering" the pathogen, leading to a quicker and more robust response upon subsequent exposures.

    Clinical Implications and Applications:

Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT): Foals that do not receive adequate levels of IgG due to poor quality colostrum or inadequate nursing are at risk of FPT, which can lead to increased susceptibility to infections. Blood tests can be done to measure IgG levels in foals to ensure they have acquired sufficient passive immunity.

Therapeutic Use: Equine IgG can be administered therapeutically to foals that have experienced FPT, usually in the form of plasma transfusions.

Disease Monitoring: In adult horses, IgG levels are measured to assess immune status, particularly after vaccinations or during the course of certain diseases.

Vaccine Efficacy: IgG levels are often monitored to determine a horse's response to vaccination, ensuring that adequate protection against specific diseases has been achieved.

    Nutritional and Health Management:

Ensuring that mares produce high-quality colostrum and that foals ingest it in the first few hours after birth is crucial for the initial immune protection of the foal.

Nutrition and general health maintenance of horses influence the quality of the immune response and the production of IgG.

In conclusion, equine IgG is a fundamental component of the horse's immune system, providing essential protection against infectious diseases and contributing to the overall immune competence of the animal. Managing IgG levels, particularly in neonatal foals, is critical for maintaining health and preventing disease.
