    Pathogen Information

Swine enteric coronavirus, or Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV), is a highly infectious virus that belongs to the Alphacoronavirus genus and is widely recognized as a significant threat to the pig farming industry worldwide. PEDV was first identified in the United Kingdom in 1971 and has since spread to many other regions globally.

Swine enteric coronavirus is a small, enveloped virion with a characteristic crown-like appearance under electron microscopy. The viral genome of swine enteric coronavirus contains a single-stranded RNA molecule of approximately 28 kilobases, which encodes several structural and non-structural proteins required for the virus's replication and pathogenesis.

The spike protein, encoded by the spike gene, plays a vital role in swine enteric coronavirus's pathogenesis and immunity. The spike protein mediates virus-cell attachment and entry through its interaction with the host cell receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and facilitates membrane fusion between the virus and host cell. The spike protein's receptor-binding domain (RBD) is located at the C-terminal end of the protein and interacts specifically with ACE2. Additionally, the spike protein elicits neutralizing antibodies that can provide protection against future exposure to the virus.

Swine enteric coronavirus mainly infects domestic pigs of all ages, although the severity of disease differs between age categories. Clinical signs of PEDV infection include acute diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, dehydration, and lethargy. Additionally, severe cases may result in high mortality rates, especially in neonatal piglets.

To diagnose swine enteric coronavirus, several diagnostic techniques are used, including nucleic acid-based detection methods such as PCR and ELISA. These techniques target specific viral genes or proteins, such as the nucleocapsid gene or the spike protein, to detect the presence of the virus. Traditional diagnostic approaches such as virus isolation and electron microscopy are also available. Accurate and timely diagnosis is critical in controlling the spread of the virus and protecting pig health.

The transmission mechanisms of swine enteric coronavirus are still under investigation, but the virus likely spreads via the fecal-oral route or aerosolized particles. Additionally, indirect contact with fomites contaminated with the virus may also contribute to the viral spread within and between farms.

Several vaccines against swine enteric coronavirus have been developed, and their efficacy is currently being evaluated. Moreover, various control measures have been implemented to prevent and control PEDV outbreaks, including the use of disinfectants, biosecurity protocols, and quarantine procedures.

In conclusion, Swine enteric coronavirus is a highly contagious virus that poses a severe threat to pig farming worldwide. Its pathogenesis involves several viral genes and proteins, including the spike protein, which interacts with the host cell receptor ACE2. Effective diagnosis and control measures are necessary to limit its spread and prevent costly morbidity and mortality in pig populations.
