    Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a bacterium that causes respiratory diseases in pigs. It belongs to the class Mollicutes, which includes organisms that have a small genome and lack cell walls made of peptidoglycan. As a result, they are structurally different from other bacteria and are classified as part of the phylum Tenericutes.

    Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a pathogenic organism that can cause infections in pigs of all ages. The bacterium is transmitted through direct contact between infected and uninfected animals or through contaminated aerosols. Pigs can also become infected if they consume feed or water contaminated with the bacterium.

    Once Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae enters the pig’s respiratory tract, it colonizes the cilia of the trachea and bronchi, leading to inflammation and damage to the respiratory tissues. This damage results in decreased lung function and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections. The bacterium can survive for several weeks in the environment and can persist in pig herds for long periods.

    Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae mainly infects pigs, causing respiratory disease known as porcine enzootic pneumonia (PEP). Other conditions caused by this pathogen include porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) and swine respiratory disease (SRD).
