    Target/Biomarker information

Mycoplasmas are among the top concerns of the swine industry; different species cause different clinical signs. Infection with Mycoplasma hyosynoviae is a common cause of arthritis in slaughter pigs. This syndrome has been reported from several countries. Several reports have shown that a large number of Danish herds – probably the vast majority of pig herds – are infected with M. hyosynoviae. Mycoplasma hyosynoviae is first replicates in the upper respiratory tract of pigs, colonizes the tonsils and can persist there forever. Indeed, asymptomatic pigs can become lifelong carrier. Within 10 days of infection the bacteria travels from the upper respiratory tract to the joints and cause arthritis.
