Target/Biomarker information
Taylorella equigenitalis is a small, slow-growing (3–7 days on specialized hemolyzed blood agar), Gram-negative, microaerophilic, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive but otherwise biochemically unreactive coccobacillus. It is the cause of contagious equine metritis (CEM), which was first defined in Newmarket in 1977. It causes epidemic acute endometritis, with clinical signs varying from a copious mucoid/gray vaginal discharge, which may be first seen as early as 2 days after mating, to no gross signs of abnormality. The acute endometritis usually causes conception failure, but some mares resolve the acute infection soon enough to allow conception and normal pregnancy to proceed. Taylorella equigenitalis is transmitted by either carrier stallions or mares directly during mating or by indirect genital contact with contaminated fomites (vaginal speculums, artificial vagina, or wash buckets).1 There is evidence that transmission of T. equigenitalis through the use of fresh cooled or extended semen (with antibiotics) from an infected stallion is possible2 but most likely infrequent.
