    Target/Biomarker information

The non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) include Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, Mycobacterium kansasii and over 150 additional species of opportunistic pathogens whose source for human infection is the environment. NTM are normal inhabitants of soils, natural waters, drinking water distribution systems and household plumbing. NTM cause pulmonary, dermal, lymph node and disseminated infections in susceptible individuals. Risk factors for NTM disease include immunodeficiency, structural abnormalities of the chest, and exposure to dusts and inheritance of mutations leading to cystic fibrosis or α-1-antitrypsin-deficiency. The lipid-rich outer membrane of NTM is responsible, in part, for their resistance to disinfectants and commonly used antibiotics. Long term, multidrug regimens, often including rifampicin and clarithromycin, can result in disappearance of symptoms. Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of NTM infection are available.
