    Anaplasma platys, also known as Ehrlichia platys, is a gram-negative, tick-borne bacteria that belongs to the order Rickettsiales and family Anaplasmataceae. It was first identified in platelets of dogs in the 1970s and is now recognized as one of the major causes of canine vector-borne diseases worldwide.

    Anaplasma platys is an obligate intracellular bacteria that infects and reproduces within host cells such as platelets, monocytes, and macrophages. The exact mechanism of transmission and pathogenesis of A. platys is not well understood, but it is believed that ticks act as the primary vector and transmit the bacteria to host animals during the feeding process. Once inside the host animal, A. platys can cause significant damage by disrupting normal host cell function and inducing immune responses.

    A. platys primarily infects dogs and can cause a disease called canine cyclic thrombocytopenia (CCT). In CCT, there are periodic decreases in platelet counts, which can lead to bleeding and associated clinical signs such as fever, lethargy, anorexia, and petechiae. A. platys infection has been reported in dogs from various parts of the world, including Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia.

    Diagnosis of A. platys infection can be challenging due to the non-specific clinical signs and the low level of bacteria in the bloodstream. However, several diagnostic methods have been developed, including serological assays and molecular-based techniques. Serological assays such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) can detect antibodies against major surface protein (MSP) antigens of A. platys. Molecular-based techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR can detect the presence of A. platys DNA in blood samples, and target genes such as msp5.

    Treatment of A. platys infection typically involves the use of antibiotics such as doxycycline, tetracycline, and minocycline. Treatment is generally effective but may require prolonged administration due to the intracellular nature of the bacteria. Prevention of A. platys infection in dogs involves the use of tick control measures and limiting exposure to tick-infested areas.
