    Campylobacter is a genus of microaerophilic, spiral-shaped, Gram-negative bacteria that are commonly found in the intestines of animals, including poultry, cattle, sheep, pigs, and pets. Two species in particular, Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, are responsible for the majority of human infections caused by this pathogen.

    One of the defining features of Campylobacter is its ability to move through fluids and across surfaces via its flagella, which are whip-like structures that provide the bacteria with motility. The primary proteins involved in flagellar movement are encoded by the flaA and flaB genes, which respectively produce major flagellin proteins that form the flagellar filaments.

    Another protein produced by Campylobacter is the cadF protein, which mediates adhesion to host cells and facilitates invasion. The luxS gene encodes an enzyme that is involved in quorum-sensing, which allows bacteria to communicate with one another to coordinate group behaviors such as biofilm formation. Finally, the cdtABC genes encode for the cytolethal distending toxin, which can cause cell cycle arrest, ultimately leading to cell death.

    When humans become infected with Campylobacter, it is often through consumption of contaminated food or water, or by coming into contact with infected animals or their feces. Once inside the body, these bacteria can cause a range of gastrointestinal diseases, including diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Symptoms usually appear within 2-5 days after infection and typically last for about a week.

    To diagnose Campylobacter infections, several methods are available. Culture-based methods involve growing the bacteria on selective media, which can be time-consuming and may take up to two weeks to obtain results. Alternatively, PCR assays can target specific Campylobacter genes such as the 16S rRNA and cadF genes, allowing for more rapid detection of the pathogen.

    ELISA tests are another diagnostic option that detect antibodies against Campylobacter-specific antigens such as the flaA protein. These tests are often used in outbreak scenarios to determine the extent of infection in a population.

    Fortunately, Campylobacter infections can be prevented through proper food handling and preparation, as well as good hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing. Additionally, efforts to reduce Campylobacter in agriculture and food production have been ongoing, with measures such as vaccination of animals and use of probiotics being explored as potential solutions.
