Human Atrial Natriuretic Peptide is composed of 28 amino acids, with a molecular weight of approximately 3.5 kDa. Its synthesis predominantly occurs in the cardiac atria in response to stretch receptors being activated due to increased atrial pressure or volume, a phenomenon observed during conditions such as congestive heart failure or volume expansion.Once synthesized and released into circulation, hANP exerts its effects primarily through binding to specific receptors, known as natriuretic peptide receptors (NPRs), located in various tissues, including the kidneys, blood vessels, and adrenal glands. Binding of hANP to NPRs initiates a signaling cascade that leads to vasodilation, increased glomerular filtration rate, and enhanced sodium excretion in the kidneys. These combined actions result in reduced blood volume, lower blood pressure, and maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance.
While the structural and functional aspects of hANP are well-conserved between humans and cattle, there may be subtle species-specific differences in the regulation of hANP expression and receptor distribution.
