    Target/Biomarker Information

Bovine Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most abundant type of antibody in cattle blood circulation and is a critical component of the immune system. It plays a vital role in the defense against microbial infections and in the regulation of immune responses.

    Functions of Bovine IgG:

Pathogen Neutralization: Bovine IgG can neutralize pathogens by binding to viruses, bacteria, and toxins, preventing them from interacting with host cells.

Opsonization: IgG facilitates the process of opsonization, where pathogens coated with these antibodies are more easily recognized and engulfed by phagocytes like neutrophils and macrophages.

Antibody-Dependent Cellular Cytotoxicity (ADCC): IgG antibodies can recruit natural killer (NK) cells to infected cells, which then kill the target cell.

Complement Activation: IgG can initiate the classical pathway of the complement system, leading to the lysis of pathogens or infected cells.

Immune Regulation: IgG antibodies are involved in feedback mechanisms that regulate the immune system, maintaining balance and preventing overactivation.

IgG in Colostrum and Neonatal Immunity:

Newborn calves are born agammaglobulinemic, meaning they have very low levels of circulating IgG due to the bovine placenta's unique structure, which does not allow the transfer of maternal antibodies.

Calves rely on the passive transfer of immunity through colostrum, the first milk produced after giving birth. Colostrum is rich in IgG, and it is crucial that calves ingest an adequate amount within the first few hours of life to acquire this passive immunity.

The failure of passive transfer (FPT) of antibodies from colostrum can lead to increased morbidity and mortality in calves, making proper management of colostrum feeding essential in cattle husbandry.

    Therapeutic Uses:

Bovine IgG is also used therapeutically in the form of hyperimmune serum or plasma to treat various diseases in cattle and other species, including providing passive immunity to other animals that may not have adequate antibody protection.

    Monitoring Health and Disease:

The levels of IgG are commonly measured to assess the immune status of cattle. High levels may indicate a response to infection or vaccination, while low levels can suggest an immunodeficiency or a failure in passive transfer in calves.

    Nutritional Supplements:

Bovine IgG is sometimes extracted and used as a supplement in animal feed to boost immunity, especially in species that may not receive colostrum naturally or adequately, like some livestock or pets.

In summary, bovine IgG is a key molecule in the immune system of cattle, providing both active and passive immunity against a wide range of pathogens. It is critical for the health and survival of newborn calves and plays a significant role in disease resistance throughout the life of the cattle. Managing IgG levels through proper vaccination, colostrum management, and nutritional support is a cornerstone of effective bovine health programs.
