Structurally, PINP is a fragment of the precursor protein procollagen type I, a linchpin in collagen production in cattle.

    Procollagen type I is composed of two proα1(I) chains and one proα2(I) chain, intricately intertwined to form a triple helix. During collagen biosynthesis, procollagen is synthesized and then cleaved, yielding mature collagen fibrils. PINP, derived from the N-terminal end of the proα1(I) chain, serves as an essential marker of ongoing collagen synthesis and bone remodeling in cattle.
