Target/Biomarker information
Bovine Soluble Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells-2 (sTREM2) stands as a captivating component of the bovine immune and central nervous systems. In its soluble form, sTREM2 assumes a distinct identity compared to its membrane-bound counterpart, TREM2. sTREM2 is generated through proteolytic cleavage of the membrane-bound receptor and can be found in the cerebrospinal fluid and bloodstream of cattle. Structurally, sTREM2 shares a structural similarity with its membrane-bound counterpart but lacks the transmembrane domain. It retains the extracellular domain responsible for interactions with various ligands and immune cells. This unique structure empowers sTREM2 to exert its functions within the bovine body. Functionally, sTREM2 plays a central role in modulating immune responses within the central nervous system of cattle. Its presence is particularly pronounced in microglia, specialized immune cells resident in the bovine brain. sTREM2 serves as a signaling molecule, influencing the behavior of microglia and other immune cells, especially in the context of neuroinflammation. Crucially, sTREM2's role extends beyond immune modulation. Research suggests that sTREM2 is involved in the phagocytic clearance of cellular debris and potentially contributes to the resolution of inflammation in the bovine brain. This multifaceted functionality underscores the importance of sTREM2 in maintaining the delicate balance between immune responses and neurological health in cattle.
