    Target/Biomarker Information

Canine Apolipoprotein E, more commonly referred to as Canine ApoE, is a multifaceted protein that holds a central position in the intricate landscape of canine physiology. Synthesized predominantly in the liver and brain of domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), this glycoprotein possesses a distinctive structure characterized by carbohydrates attached to its polypeptide chain. As a distinguished member of the apolipoprotein family, Canine ApoE plays a pivotal role in regulating lipid metabolism, with a particular emphasis on cholesterol management within the canine body.

The significance of Canine ApoE becomes most apparent in its association with high-density lipoproteins (HDL), widely recognized as "good cholesterol." HDL particles, responsible for transporting cholesterol and lipids in the bloodstream, rely significantly on Canine ApoE for their structural integrity and functionality. This biomarker is an indispensable component of HDLs, contributing not only to their structural integrity but also to their dynamic role in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway.

The orchestration of cholesterol transport begins when Canine ApoE binds to lipids, effectively transforming nascent HDL particles into active carriers of excess cholesterol. These HDLs venture into peripheral tissues, retrieving surplus cholesterol and lipids, and then embark on a journey back to the liver. In the liver, cholesterol undergoes metabolism and eventual excretion, thus ensuring the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels within the canine body.
