CYFRA21-1, also known as Cytokeratin 19 Fragment 21-1, is a noteworthy biomarker within the context of dogs (canines). It originates from cytokeratin 19, a protein that plays a pivotal role in maintaining the structural integrity of epithelial cells. Epithelial cells are widespread in various tissues throughout the canine body, including the lungs and skin. When these cells undergo changes due to injury, malignancy, or other pathological processes, CYFRA21-1 fragments can be released into the bloodstream, making it a valuable indicator of epithelial cell health.
At the molecular level, CYFRA21-1 consists of specific fragments of cytokeratin 19, notably the 21-1 fragment. These soluble protein fragments can be detected through blood tests. In healthy dogs, CYFRA21-1 levels are typically low. However, when there is damage or malignancy in epithelial tissues, such as the lungs, the levels of CYFRA21-1 can significantly increase. This phenomenon makes CYFRA21-1 a crucial biomarker for assessing the health of the respiratory and epithelial systems in canines.
