    Target/Biomarker Information

Canine Parathyroid Hormone (cPTH) is a master regulator of calcium and phosphate homeostasis in dogs, a hormone that orchestrates a delicate symphony within the body to ensure the vital functions of these minerals. Structurally, cPTH is a single-chain polypeptide hormone composed of 84 amino acids. Its genesis primarily occurs within the parathyroid glands, small, pea-sized structures located near the thyroid gland.

The fundamental role of cPTH revolves around maintaining ionized calcium levels within a narrow physiological range. When blood calcium levels dip below the optimal range, the parathyroid glands are primed to take action. These glands harbor specialized calcium-sensing receptors, which, upon detecting low calcium, trigger the release of cPTH into the bloodstream.

Once released, cPTH embarks on its mission to restore calcium balance by acting on multiple target organs. Its primary target is bone, where it exerts its influence by stimulating osteoclasts—cells responsible for bone resorption. This process releases calcium stored within the bone matrix into the bloodstream. Simultaneously, cPTH influences the kidneys, encouraging the reabsorption of calcium from the urine, effectively reducing calcium loss.

However, cPTH's involvement doesn't end there. It also plays a pivotal role in the gut, indirectly regulating calcium absorption from dietary sources. It achieves this by prompting the production of calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, which, in turn, enhances the uptake of dietary calcium in the intestines.
