    Target/Biomarker Information

Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) in horses (equines) is a glycoprotein biomarker of significant importance, playing distinct roles in fetal development and adult health. During fetal development, AFP is predominantly synthesized by the fetal liver and yolk sac. Its primary function is to serve as a carrier protein, facilitating the transport of essential nutrients, such as fatty acids, to the developing fetus. This supports fetal growth and organ development, with a particular emphasis on the liver.

In healthy adult horses, AFP levels are typically very low. The decline in AFP production occurs shortly after birth, as the yolk sac and fetal liver are replaced by the adult liver. However, deviations from this normal pattern can occur in response to specific pathological conditions.
