Target/Biomarker Information
AQP4, or Aquaporin 4, represents a remarkable feat of molecular engineering within the context of horses (equines). This transmembrane protein is a member of the aquaporin family, a group of water channel proteins that facilitate the movement of water molecules across cell membranes. In equines, AQP4 assumes a prominent role in the central nervous system, where its strategic placement and function are indispensable for maintaining brain and spinal cord homeostasis.
Structurally, AQP4 is a hexameric protein with six transmembrane domains and five connecting loops, forming a pore-like structure through which water molecules selectively pass. This high specificity for water ensures rapid and efficient water transport while preventing the movement of ions and other solutes. AQP4's localization within astrocytes, specialized glial cells in the brain and spinal cord, underscores its significance in regulating water balance within these crucial neural structures.
