    Target/Biomarker Information

Equine GFAP, Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein, serves as a guardian within the intricate tapestry of equine neurobiology. This protein, predominantly residing within the astrocytes of the central nervous system (CNS) of horses, plays multifaceted roles in maintaining the structural and functional integrity of the nervous system.

Structurally, Equine GFAP is a member of the intermediate filament protein family, sharing genetic and functional homology with its counterparts in diverse species, including humans. Astrocytes, the primary reservoir of GFAP, rely on this protein for structural support and cytoskeletal resilience. Equine GFAP filaments form an elaborate network within astrocytes, contributing to their adaptability and their ability to respond to various challenges.

Functionally, Equine GFAP plays a pivotal role in supporting neuronal health. Astrocytes, by nourishing neurons, regulating synaptic transmission, and modulating neurotransmitter levels, are integral to CNS function. Equine GFAP actively participates in these processes, ensuring the optimal functioning of the equine CNS.

However, the significance of Equine GFAP extends beyond these foundational roles. In response to CNS injury, neuroinflammation, or neurodegenerative conditions, astrocytes undergo a transformative process known as astrogliosis. During astrogliosis, astrocytes become activated, leading to increased expression of GFAP. This upregulation serves as a protective and reparative response, as astrocytes encapsulate injured areas, isolate toxic substances, and support neuronal recovery.
