    Structurally, Equine TrxR comprises a fascinating blend of amino acids and selenium, arranged meticulously to form an enzyme of paramount importance. Its active site, housing the selenium atom, acts as the catalytic center for the reduction of thioredoxin, a fundamental player in the cellular antioxidant defense system.

    The primary function of Equine TrxR is to act as a vigilant guardian against the perils of oxidative stress. As horses go about their daily activities, their cells generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) as natural byproducts of metabolism. These ROS, if left unchecked, can wreak havoc within cells, causing damage to vital molecules such as proteins, lipids, and DNA. Equine TrxR steps in as the protector, diligently reducing the oxidized form of thioredoxin back to its active, reduced state. This restoration ensures that thioredoxin remains fully operational in its role of neutralizing ROS and maintaining the redox balance.
