Feline C-reactive Protein (fCRP) is a central biomarker in the realm of feline health, intricately linked to the cat's immune response to inflammatory challenges. Structurally, it is a pentameric protein, comprising five identical subunits, each with a molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. Its hepatic synthesis is instigated by pro-inflammatory cytokines, most notably interleukin-6 (IL-6).
The hallmark of fCRP lies in its rapid responsiveness to inflammation. When a cat encounters infectious agents, injuries, or other triggers that induce inflammation, the liver promptly commences the production of fCRP. This results in a significant increase in its concentration within the bloodstream, making fCRP a sentinel biomarker capable of detecting even subtle deviations from the norm in a cat's health.
Functionally, fCRP serves as an acute-phase reactant. It actively participates in the innate immune system's response to inflammatory challenges. By enhancing opsonization and facilitating phagocytosis, fCRP plays a pivotal role in the removal of invading pathogens and damaged tissue, thus aiding in the resolution of inflammation.
