    Target/Biomarker Information

Cat/Feline Haptoglobin is an acute phase protein that serves as a biomarker for inflammation and tissue injury in cats. In veterinary medicine, haptoglobin is measured to assess the presence and extent of inflammation, as its levels in the bloodstream rise significantly in response to tissue damage, infection, or inflammation.

The utility of haptoglobin as a diagnostic marker is particularly valuable because it is not typically elevated by stress alone, which can be a confounding factor in assessing feline health. This makes haptoglobin a more specific indicator of pathological processes compared to other markers that may also increase due to stress or excitement.

When a cat's body experiences inflammation, the liver is stimulated to produce higher amounts of haptoglobin. This protein functions to bind free hemoglobin released into the plasma by the destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis), thereby inhibiting its oxidative activity. The haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex is then cleared by the reticuloendothelial system, primarily in the liver and spleen. By sequestering free hemoglobin, haptoglobin prevents kidney damage and conserves iron for red blood cell production.

Haptoglobin measurements are used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests to evaluate the health of cats, particularly in the presence of diseases such as infectious diseases, immune-mediated diseases, neoplasia, and various other conditions that cause systemic inflammation. It is also monitored in post-surgical patients and in those undergoing treatment for inflammatory diseases to assess the response to therapy.

In feline medicine, the interpretation of haptoglobin levels must be done in the context of the overall clinical picture, as various factors can influence its concentration. Nonetheless, it remains a critical component of the panel of acute phase proteins that are routinely evaluated in cats with suspected inflammatory conditions.
