Target/Biomarker information
TIMP-1, also known as Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases-1, is a specific biomarker found in feline species. It belongs to the TIMP family, comprising TIMP-1, TIMP-2, TIMP-3, and TIMP-4. These biomarkers are endogenous inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes responsible for the degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Among the members of the TIMP family, TIMP-1 is extensively studied and characterized. It plays a crucial role in maintaining ECM homeostasis and regulating tissue remodeling processes in cats. TIMP-1 exerts its inhibitory effect on MMPs by forming complexes with them, preventing their enzymatic activity and subsequently controlling ECM turnover. The balance between MMPs and TIMPs is essential for normal physiological functions, such as wound healing, angiogenesis, and immune response modulation. Aberrant regulation of TIMP-1 expression has been implicated in various diseases, including cancer, fibrosis, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions. In these pathological states, dysregulated TIMP-1 levels can disrupt the delicate ECM balance, leading to tissue damage, disease progression, and impaired healing processes. Therefore, quantifying TIMP-1 levels in feline models provides valuable insights into ECM dynamics, tissue remodeling, and associated diseases. Various techniques, such as ELISA, immunohistochemistry, or molecular analysis, can be employed to measure TIMP-1 concentrations in biological samples like serum, plasma, or tissues. Understanding the distinct properties and functions of TIMP-1 in cats contributes to improving diagnostic tools, therapeutic strategies, and overall feline health management.
