It belongs to the defensin family, a group of small, cationic peptides that wields potent antimicrobial properties, serving as the first line of defense against invading microorganisms.
Structurally, α-defensin 1 possesses a distinct molecular architecture characterized by its three-disulfide bridge motif. This structural arrangement confers α-defensin 1 with the ability to permeabilize the cell membranes of harmful microorganisms. It does so by forming pores within these membranes, rendering them nonfunctional and unable to colonize or infect the gastrointestinal lining.
