Target/Biomarker information
α-defensin 5, known as Def5 in scientific parlance, is a remarkable antimicrobial peptide found in the feline (cat) digestive system. It belongs to the α-defensin family, a group of small cationic peptides known for their potent antimicrobial properties. Within the feline physiology, α-defensin 5 assumes a pivotal role in the innate immune system, primarily within the small intestine. The production and secretion of α-defensin 5 primarily occur within specialized cells called Paneth cells. These cells are strategically located in the crypts of Lieberkühn, tiny invaginations within the intestinal mucosa. Paneth cells are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal epithelium and defending against potential microbial threats that may enter the digestive tract. Structurally, α-defensin 5 possesses a unique configuration of cysteine residues that form disulfide bonds. These bonds not only provide structural stability but also enhance its antimicrobial activity. The primary function of α-defensin 5 is to engage and neutralize a diverse array of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. By disrupting the integrity of microbial cell membranes, α-defensin 5 plays a vital role in the body's defense against invasive microorganisms.
