Soluble ST2 (sST2) in cats is a soluble receptor intricately woven into feline cardiovascular health, playing a pivotal role in immune responses, inflammation regulation, and cardiac function. It represents a key component in the complex network of interactions that govern cardiac health and the body's response to cardiac stressors.
In greater detail, sST2 is a product of the ST2 gene and exists in two primary forms: the membrane-bound ST2L and the soluble sST2. ST2L serves as a receptor for interleukin-33 (IL-33), an interleukin associated with anti-inflammatory and protective effects in the cardiovascular system. When IL-33 binds to membrane-bound ST2L, it contributes to cardiac protection and immune regulation.
However, sST2, the soluble form of the ST2 receptor, acts as a decoy receptor, neutralizing the beneficial effects of IL-33. In cats, sST2 is predominantly secreted by cardiac cells, particularly cardiomyocytes, in response to various cardiac stressors, inflammation, or injury. Its presence in the bloodstream serves as a critical biomarker for assessing cardiac health and identifying cardiac pathologies.
