Target/Biomarker information

The trefoil factor (TFF) family consists of three thermostable and protease-resistant proteins, TFF1, TFF2, and TFF3. These proteins are thought to play a pivotal role in mucosal protection against damage. Their oncogenic potential has also been reported to be associated with cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion and angiogenesis. The expression of these peptides in the gastrointestinal tract occurs in a tissue- and cell-specific manner. TFF1 and TFF2 are predominantly expressed in gastric mucosa, while TFF3 is expressed in goblet cells of the intestine and also at lower levels in other organs such as the breast, salivary gland, respiratory tract, and hypothalamus. Recently, serum levels of TFFs in cancer patients, including those with gastric cancer, have been reported to be increased and therefore could be useful biomarkers for screening.
